How to Use ChatGPT to Write a Resume Without Sounding Like AI
8 min read
ChatGPT can turn a messy list of jobs into a clean resume in a minute. That is useful. But if you just type "write me a resume for a marketing job", you get the same resume everyone else gets: stock phrases, inflated verbs, and sometimes skills you do not have.
Recruiters see a lot of those resumes now. The ones that stand out are the ones with real facts in them.
This guide shows a way to use ChatGPT, or any AI writing tool, that keeps your own facts in and the filler out. It comes with prompts you can copy.
What ChatGPT is good at, and what it gets wrong
ChatGPT is good at structure. It can sort your jobs into a clear order, turn long notes into short lines, fix grammar, and match the words of a job post.
It is bad at facts about you, because it does not know any. When it has nothing to go on, it fills the gap with phrases that sound like a resume: "results-driven professional", "proven track record", "drove key initiatives across teams". Worse, it sometimes adds duties, tools or results that you never had, because they are typical for the job.
So the rule is simple. You bring the facts. ChatGPT only shapes them.
Step 1: Write down your facts first
Before you open ChatGPT, make a plain list for each job. It does not need to be well written. Notes are fine.
- Job title, employer, city, start and end dates.
- What kind of business it was and who you served.
- What you did on a normal day.
- The tools, software and machines you used.
- Numbers: how many customers, orders, staff, or dollars.
- One or two things that went well because of you.
- Anything you started, fixed or improved.
This list is the most important part. Every good line on your resume will come from it.
Step 2: Give it the job post
Copy the job post you are applying for. ChatGPT can use it to pick which of your facts to put first and to use the same words for the same skills. If the post says "Salesforce", your resume should say "Salesforce" too, as long as you have used it.
Tell it clearly that the job post is only for matching. You do not want it to copy duties from the post onto your resume.
Step 3: Ask for a draft with clear rules
Paste your facts and the job post, then give it rules. Here is a prompt you can copy:
"Write a one-page resume from my notes below. Use only the facts in my notes. Do not add any skill, tool, duty, number or result that is not in my notes. Use the job post only to choose which facts to put first and to match its wording for skills I have. Write short lines that start with a plain verb. Do not use stock resume phrases or buzzwords such as results-driven, dynamic, passionate or proven track record. Do not write a summary longer than three lines. If a line would be stronger with a detail I did not give, put [missing detail] in brackets and I will fill it in."
The bracket rule matters. It stops ChatGPT from making up a number when it wants one.
Step 4: Check every line
Read the draft line by line, next to your notes. For each line, ask three questions.
- Is it true? If it says something you did not do, cut it or fix it.
- Could I explain it in an interview? If not, cut it.
- Could it describe anyone in this job? If yes, add the fact that makes it yours.
Look hard at the skills section. This is where invented skills hide most often. Remove anything you could not use on your first day.
Then fill in every [missing detail] with a real number or name, or delete it.
Step 5: Make it sound like you
Even a true resume can sound like AI wrote it. A few changes fix most of that.
Read it out loud. If a line sounds like an ad, rewrite it the way you would say it to a friend who asked what you did at that job. Swap long or showy verbs for short, plain ones like used, led and ran. Vary the start of your lines so they do not all begin with the same kind of verb. And keep one or two details that are a little unusual. They are what a recruiter remembers.
When you are done, paste the resume into the free AI resume detector at siftfirst.com/tools/ai-resume-detector. It tells you how likely the resume is to read as AI-written and which lines are the reason.
More prompts you can copy
Use these one at a time, after you have a draft.
- "Here is one line from my resume. Give me three shorter versions that keep every fact and add nothing new."
- "List every line in this resume that could describe anyone in this job. Do not rewrite them. Just list them."
- "Compare my resume to this job post. Which skills in the post are missing from my resume? Do not add them, just list them."
- "Check this resume for buzzwords and stock phrases, such as results-driven, dynamic, passionate or proven track record. Show me each line where one appears."
Notice that most of these ask ChatGPT to point things out, not to write. That keeps the writing, and the facts, yours.
Will employers mind that you used AI?
Most employers do not mind if you used a tool to tidy your resume. They mind when the resume is generic or when it claims things that are not true. A resume with your real facts, checked line by line, is fine however you wrote it.
Be ready to talk about every line in an interview. A good interviewer will pick one result from your resume and ask you to walk through it. If you can, the resume did its job.

Is it OK to use ChatGPT to write a resume?
Yes. Many people use it for a first draft. What matters is that every line is true and that the resume shows what you did. Give it your own facts and check every line before you send it.
Can employers tell if ChatGPT wrote my resume?
Not for sure, and no tool can prove it. But recruiters notice resumes full of stock phrases, because they see the same ones on many applications. A resume with specific tools, numbers and results does not read as AI-written.
Will ChatGPT make up experience on my resume?
It can. When it has few facts, it may add duties, tools or results that are typical for the job. Tell it to use only your notes, and check the skills section with extra care.
What is the best prompt for writing a resume with ChatGPT?
One that gives it your facts, the job post, and clear rules: use only the facts given, add nothing new, avoid stock phrases, and leave [brackets] where a detail is missing. The full prompt is in step 3 of this guide.
